Architect and decorative artist. After an apprentiship of six years, he travelled for four years in Italy, Greece, Turkey, Egypt and Spain. In his travels he became fascinated by eastern forms, and the books he published reproducing these patterns influenced the designs of English wallpaper, carpets and furniture. On his return to England in 1836, he busied himself in his professional work. His primary work being interior decoration, he was one of the superintendents of works for the great exhibition of 1851, and was responsible for the general decoration of the Crystal Palace at Sydenham.
