Fashion Designer. Born in Warrington, he showed an early interest in clothes design. In 1958, he enrolled at the Regional College of Art in Manchester, where he met painter David Hockney and the textile designer Celia Birtwell. He attented the Royal College of Art from 1962-1965, and secured a first-class degree. He first featured in Vogue, August 1965, and quickly made his mark in the fashion industry. His fashion show at Chelsea Town Hall was attended by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. In 1969 he married Celia Birtwell, producing two children. The period 1965-1974 was his meridian. His many clients included, Mick Jagger, Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton. Even Jimi Hendrix wore his clothes. He was not just popular in London, but also in New York and Paris. He mixed with Andy Warhol and Truman Capote in New York. His marriage began to deteriorate, after he started to have affairs with men, and of his decline into drug addiction. This culminated in a divorce in 1974. This was the beginning of a cruel downfall which saw him made bankrupt in 1983. He also lost his house. Many wondered why none of his friends like John Paul Getty Jr or Paul McCartney ever provided money money for him to restart his buisness or help him to buy a house. In 1996, he was stabbed to death by his lover, Diego Cogolato, who was later onvicted of murder. His clothes are again highly sought after and very fashionable, and are are worn by the likes of Kate Moss.
