The following biographical information is extracted from a biography of the grandson of Henry Hartsock, James Rush Hartsock, in the book "Souvenir and Annual for 1881-82", a profile of prominent citizens of Iowa City and Johnson County, Iowa.
-----
Frederick Herzog, was born in 1723; and Henry, his son, was born in 1749, in or near the city or fortress of Kehl, on the River Rhine, in the Grand Duchy of Baden, Germany, opposite the city of Strasburg, France. Henry and his father Frederick, and two elder brothers (Andrew and Stephen), emigrated to America in 1753, and settled in the valley of Poquistion creek, near Philadelphia, Pa. At the close of the Revolutionary war, in which Henry had enlisted as a soldier, he found that his name had been entered on the rolls as Henry Hartsock, and consequently he could only draw his bounty and land warrant from the government in that name; hence the name was changed from Herzog to Hartsock. He then emigrated, with his family to Washington county, Pa.

[NOTE: Most researchers indicate that Henry Hartsock's father was Conradt Herzog. This biography of James Rush Hartsock from which the above is extracted was written in 1881 during the time when James was still alive. Could the research be in error or could Conradt have had a middle or first name that was 'Frederick'? If Conradt is an error, who was Conradt and how was he related to Henry Hartsock?]
