Mabel Alice (Hall) Wheat 85, of Carthage, Route 3, died Friday at McCune Brooks Hospital of a sudden illness. She was born September 5, 1906, to William Andrew Hall and Josephine (Taylor) Hall at Avilla, Missouri.
Mabel lived in the Carthage and Avilla area all her life, and before her marriage had worked as a telephone switchboard operator. Her father brought the first telephone system to Avilla in 1888, and for many years, the switchboard was located in the front room of the Hall home on what is now Route 66. Mabel married Kenneth B. Wheat on November 16, 1927, in Joplin. He preceded her in death.
Mabel enjoyed cooking for her loved ones who especially enjoyed her "wacky cake," peach cobbler, home-grown strawberries and many other specialties. She created many pieces of beautiful crochet work and knitted afghans for others. Mabel was known for her kind and sweet nature and how much she loved her family. She was a member of First Christian Church, Carthage.
Survivors include two sons, W. A. Wheat, Artesia, New Mexico, Kenneth W. Wheat, Carthage, and a daughter Naydene Cunningham, Reeds. She is also survived by her brother, Rolland Hall, Avilla, and a sister, Lucille Cearnal, Joplin, as well as 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, December 30th, at Ulmer Funeral Home, Carthage. Burial will be in Avilla Cemetery, Avilla.
