Bertie was a very talented musician. According to my grandmother, he could pick up any instrument and play it in ten minutes. When he was younger, Bertie played in music groups all over southwest and central Missouri, usually at county fairs but also for traveling medicine shows.

Later Bertie owned and operated a barber shop in Avilla.
