Deceased Name: Fred D. Nickel Sr.
81, of Springfield, formerly of Virden, died Thursday at Memorial Medical Center.

He was born May 10, 1913, in Elkhart, the son of Jake and Anna Fuiten Nickel. He married Mary H. Adcock in 1939 in Troy, Mo.

Mr. Nickel was an auto mechanic for many years, owning and operating Brilliant Bronze Service Station in Virden and later the Nickel Garage in Waggoner. He retired in 1973 from Freeman Coal Co. in Farmersville where he was a top repairman. After retirement, he continued to be an auto mechanic, operating out of his garage at home.

He was a member of Elm Street Christian Church, and former member of the First Christian Church in Virden.

Survivors: wife, Mary H.; two sons, Fred Dallas Nickel Jr. of Mulberry Grove and William Darell Nickel of Springfield; two daughters, Mary Alice Syson of Springfield and Ada Marie Hoffman of Bollingbrook; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, George Wilson Nickel of LaHabre, Calif.; two sisters, Anabel Kime and Fern Smith, both of Virden; and several nieces and nephews.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Berry Funeral Home, Virden, Rev. Paul Cox officiating. Burial: Virden Cemetery.
