Catherine Hermann Soeder told the 1920 census-taker that she was born in Rhein Pfalz, and that she came to Baltimore in 1853. She married George F. Soeder approx. 1865, but a family story says that they had come across from Germany in the same ship but never met until years later. Of their seven children, only two survived life in West Baltimore: Andrew Albert Soeder (1868-1964) and Anna Elizabeth Soeder Schwarz (1872-1957).

According to Western Cemetery's records, in addition to Catherine Soeder's grave, three other graves are in the unmarked plot: Catherine's husband, George F. Soeder (b. February 18, 1841, Germany; buried May 21, 1927), George Souder (d. 1885) and Adam Souder (d. 1884). These two last may be two of the five of their offspring who died in childhood. Where are the graves of the other three, and what are their names? According to the 1870 census, when George and Catherine were living in Randallstown, with George's parents, Bernhard and Maria Soeder (also spelled Sader), George and Catherine had, in addition to son Andrew, a daughter, Lena (b. Jan. 1870; Lena is probably short for Magdalena, a family name). We believe they had moved to the city by 1880. If Lena and two other infants died before 1880, they may be buried somewhere in the Randallstown area . . .

At least three spellings of the family surname have turned up in records: the maiden name of George's sister, Magdalena Bielefeld, has come down through that family as "Sader". George and Catherine spelled it "Soeder." In the Western Cemetery records, it appears as "Souder."
