Pioneer grain dealer and businessman. Born March 24, 1821 in Massachusetts, came to Milwaukee in 1844, where he engaged in the grocery business. In 1846 he began grain-trading and soon became the largest grain dealer in the World. He began shipping grain to eastern markets in his fleet of lake sailing vessels. He was also a real estate developer and built the Newhall House in 1856-57, which was the leading hotel in the Midwest. Mr. Newhall was president of the Milwaukee Chamber of Commerce, and served as director on many financial establishments. He retired in 1874 at the age of 53 to his farm in Waukesha, WI.
