John and his family immigrated to the United States in 1866. John came first, surviving a cholera epidemic on board ship that killed one-third of the passengers. Once the quarantine on board the ship was over, he was able to locate a job in the coalmines of Leetonia. His wife and children came 3 months later.
He and Marion became naturalized US citizens in 1882.
