Thomas Stewart was born in Adamsrow, a miner's row in Newton, Midlothian. Men on both sides of his family had mined coal for generations.

Moved to Dalkeith in 1836 or 1837. There he became Underground Manager in Cowden Number One Coalpit. Later Manager of Dalkeith Collieries.

His obituary reads: "At Lothian Bank, Dalkeith, on the 1st inst., THOMAS STEWART, aged 68, who for 38 years was manager at the Dalkeith Collieries; deeply regretted." (from the Dalkeith Advertiser of October 4, 1880). His death record indicates the cause of death was "Shock from Railway accident, 12 Hours duration".
