Actor, colleague of Shakespeare. Although he began his career as a carpenter, Lowin turned to acting and is mentioned frequently in the records of impresarios Philip Henslowe and Edward Alleyn (owners of the Rose and Fortune theatres). He acted at the Rose in 1602 and by the following year was playing at the Blackfriar's Theatre, owned by the Burbage brothers. By 1608 he owned a share in the Blackfriars and went on to become its manager. After the theatres faded from use with the rise of the Puritans, he retired to Brentford and became a publican, living to a respectable age - but not quite long enough to see the Restoration and the second great rise of the theatres.
