In 1920 he and his parents and five siblings lived on a farm they were renting in Perry Township, Lawrence County, PA. Also living with them were two of his cousins: John N Barker, age 14, and Carmont W Barker, age 11. John worked on the farm.

In 1940 he and four siblings lived there on the farm while their father worked at a steel mill in Pittsburgh. Their home was valued at $3000.

In 1950 he, his wife, their three children, and his father's brother William lived on a farm off of Princeton Cut Road near Highway 422 in the same township. He also worked as a laborer in a steel tube factory and his uncle worked on the farm.
