Edward was a Private in the 20th Division Massachusetts Infantry Union Army during the Civil War when he became ill and was hospitalized at Douglas Hospital, Washington, D.C. where he died in May, 1862. While he was with his division they fought in the following two battles:

Edward lists himself in the 1855 census of Truro, Massachusetts as single, a mariner, 20 years old. He was married in Truro on August 9, 1857 to Hope S. Cobb, daughter of Richard and Susan Cobb of Truro, Massachusetts. They had one known child before his death, a daughter named Sarah who never married and is buried beside her mother in Swampscott Cemetery, Swampscott, MA. They had another daughter Abbie, born shortly before Edward's death.
