Lena Ida Becker, 4th child of William A. and Fredricka C. Neumann Becker, was born February 13, 1891, on the family homestead south of Nekoma, Kansas, and departed this life early Wednesday morning, August 6, 1980, in the Foothills Care Center, Longmont, Colorado, at the age of 89 1/2 years.

She was united in marriage to John George Hemken on August 6, 1913, in the Peace Lutheran Church near Albert, Kansas. He preceded her in death on March 28, 1969. Three (3) sons and five (5) daughters, three (3) of whom died in infancy, were born to this union.

Lena was a life-long member of the Hope Lutheran Church in Rush Center and active in its Ladies Aid Society. She was a charter member of the Hopewell Neighbors Home Extension Unit.

After John and Lena retired from farming, they moved into Rush Center where she was employed several years as cook in the Rush Center grade school. She also helped her husband as custodian at the Hope Lutheran Church.

Lena was known in her community as the "Flying Grandma" as she was always flying to California, Colorado or to Wichita to visit her children. Even after moving to Longmont, Colorado, in 1974 to be near her daughters, she continued flying to Kansas, California and Utah, until a series of mini-strokes incapacitated her and she entered the nursing home in December, 1977.

She is survived by her sons, Norman of Rush Center, Raymond of Wichita and Ernest of Pueblo, Colorado, and her daughters, Velma Keener of Rush Center and Edna Maki of Longmont, Colorado, 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She also is survived by two sisters, Emma Foelgner of Great Bend and Anna Josefiak of Kinsley, and one brother, Herman Becker of Hutchinson.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 A.M. Monday, August 11, 1980, at the Hope Lutheran Church with Rev. Stephan Ranheim of Ness City officiating. Burial was in the family plot in the church cemetery southwest of Rush Center.

A Lena Hemken Memorial Fund is being established with the Hope Lutheran Church.
