After her father died in 1860, Alvira took over his photography business.
She was Ottawa's first female professional photographer and the youngest (15 years old).
In the 1880's she decided to pursue her interest in art. She spent five years in Paris studying art, returning to Ottawa in 1891.
She also painted china and oil portraits, and taught painting and art appreciation classes.
Her work can be found in the archives of Library and Archives Canada and the Bytown Historical Museum.
She died on April 5, 1925 in Ottawa and is buried in Beechwood cemetery. Her grave is unmarked.
