Life Legacy

Dr. Jan Yestingsmeier Guynes Clark, Ph.D.
Professor and Chair of Information Systems and Cyber Security, University of Texas San Antonio, retired and residing in Oro Valley, Az. Dr. Clark passed away on Monday, March 2, 2015. Daughter of Walter and Lucille Yestingsmeier, Jan was born in Evansville, In. on October 17, 1949. Jan received her doctorate from North Texas State in Denton, Tx and became a tenured faculty member at the University of Texas, Arlington. While there she received the Endowed Commemorative Award for Overall Faculty Excellence, acted as consultant for the Cassini Saturn Project developing virtual teams in Pasadena, Ca, consulted with the UTA Automation and Robotics Institute and was awarded a Fulbright Scholar for teaching and research at the Universidade Tecnica de Lisboa and Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestao, Lisbon. Throughout her career, Jan was a prolific, technical researcher with over 80 journal and book publications. While conducting her Fulbright work in Portugal, Jan was invited to make presentations of her work to the growing English speaking academic community in Morocco, France and Spain. The following year, Jan and her husband were asked to join an Implementation Team to help with the opening of a new Moroccan University that was modeled after the American system, Al Akhawayn University. Jan and her husband fell in love with the people, environment and opportunity of Morocco. Jan became an influential force in developing a graduate and undergraduate international business curriculum in an environment where the internet was just emerging and opportunities for academic consulting and instruction with emerging businesses were rapidly expanding. Jan missed her work with doctoral students and, after 6 years in Morocco, joined the University of Texas in San Antonio. Jan established herself in the growing field of cyber security and became a key team member in the solicitation and award of millions of dollars in DoD and NIST grants. But Jan's truest pleasure and reward came in her role as PhD advisor for the ISCS program. Jan was the chair of numerous student dissertations. She excelled at developing her doctoral students and she was tenaciously committed to their success. Jan's ability to motivate her students and still demand the highest levels of performance won her the respect of students and colleagues. Jan became Chair of her department at UTSA and was instrumental in establishing a cyber security curriculum in collaboration with the Computer Science Department that was recently rated number one in the nation. The intersection of foreign cultures, academics and business development continued to inspire Jan throughout her career and she led 4 teams of students to Spain, Morocco and the Emirates to introduce students to real world international business. In January 2014, Jan was forced to retire for health reasons. Jan is survived by her husband of 23 years, Alan "Al", her mother, Lucille "Pete" Fowler, Evansville; sister Phyllis Driggs (Bob), Liberty, In; brother Kurt Yestingsmeier (Marsha), Evansville; brother Scott Yestingsmeier (Mary Ann), Evansville; 13 nieces and nephews, 14 grand-nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her father Walter Carl Yestingsmeier, brother Walter Carl Yestingsmeier Jr. and brother Gary Ray Yestingsmeier. Above all, Jan's legacy is one of genuine commitment and love of her students, friends and family. Jan's mother, brothers and sister made unforgettable trips to share her experiences abroad. Jan's "in-law" family loved her dearly and Al's father and stepmother traveled extensively with them. She is known on four continents for her smile and joyous laughter. Jan and her husband loved projects and spent much of their free time developing and remodeling homes and property, their final project being a farmhouse renovation on "Rattlesnake Hill" outside Devine, Tx, where they did their best to bring olive trees and avacados to that part of South Texas. Jan and Al obtained their sailboat cruiser certifications and enjoyed sailing and fishing in and around Corpus Christi Bay and the Caribbean. Among many interests, Jan most loved, her pets, the ocean, Monarch butterflies, art, spontaneous road trips, red wine and Belgian chocolates. Jan is known by students and colleagues around the world for her red correcting pen/comments and should she review this page it would no doubt be extremely colorful. Jan's life will be celebrated April 11, 2015 in Evansville, Indiana at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, German Township, 8701 Cynthiana Road at 2PM with open reception following at the Germania Maennerchor, 916 N.
