Jeanette Edgell, 87, of Sherwood Township, passed away Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at home, in the love and care of her family. Jeanette was born on November 26, 1926 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Orin William and Alice May “Mabel” (Stanton) Durham. She was raised in Battle Creek and graduated from Lakeview High School in 1944. She married “the boy across the road,” Joseph C. “Bud” Edgell, on July 27, 1946 at her father’s farm house. He preceded her in death on May 12, 2004. The couple moved to Sherwood in March of 1958, where they made their home until 2002. After living in a rural area all of their married life, they moved in to Union City, where they shared a small apartment. Jeanette lived the last few years of her life with her daughter and favorite son-in-law.
Mrs. Edgell had worked at the Coldwater State home for 23 years as a housekeeper, retiring in 1986. She was also a homemaker and loving mother to her children through the years. She and Joe had been members of the Sonoma United Methodist Church for many years before joining the Crossroads Bible Church in Sherwood. While at Crossroads, Jeanette sang in the choir and was involved in the jail music ministry.
Jeanette loved sewing, crocheting and listening to the Gaither’s gospel music. She loved her grandchildren and family who often called her “Little Grandma.” She also earned the nickname “Turtle” for being so slow to get around. Consequently, she began collecting turtles of all sorts. Jeanette also enjoyed traveling. She and Joe had traveled the U.S and Canada together and spent winters in Arizona and Texas for several years, where they made many friends.
Mrs. Edgell is survived by her children Kenneth (Joyce) Edgell of Ennis, TX, Jeffery (Ann) Edgell and Linda (Bob) Burgett, both of Union City, her grandchildren Karri (Cliff) Wright of Dallas, TX, Kelli (David) Skroh of Alma, TX, Robb J. Edgell of Ennis, TX, Sara (Ronnie Maddox) Edgell of Midlothian, TX, Carla Edgell of Stow, OH, Brad (Tricia) Edgell of Kalamazoo, Andy (Lynette) Burgett of Sherwood, USAF SSgt. Tyler (Tara) Burgett of Fort Riley, KS, Kenny (Jess) Burgett of New Iberia, LA, Amy (Stephen) Rohr of Ceresco, 21 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren and her sister-in-law Ann Edgell and special sister Donna Darling, both of Battle Creek. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Albert Durham Richard Durham, her sisters Margaret Root, Geraldine Lipscomb and Bea Perry, her infant brother Austin, teenage brother Morris, her granddaughter Holly Jo Burgett in 1979 and her great-granddaughter Avri Lynn Montes in 2008.
