John Wilson Macaulay was born Glasgow, Central District, Lanark, Scotland. He immigrated to the United States in 1866 through Canada to Chicago, IL. The family moved to San Jose, CA about 1870. He is the son of John and Elizabeth Wilson Macaulay.
From his obituary in the San Jose Evening News: The visions of his life were epitomized in the work which he did in instigating and leading as chairman the drive for a $500,000 civic memorial auditorium last year...he was the only one who maintained unswervingly his faithfulness to the vision of a beautiful city lying in in the center of the richest and most gorgeous valley in the world.
Macaulay associated him self with his father in a photograph business and after his father's death in 1886 he entered the clothing business with
T W Hobson Co. where he worked for the next 20 years. In 1906 along with J H Henry as an orchardist at Visalia. He entered the realty business in 1919 and founded Macaualay Farms Co. At this time he was also associated with his brother-in-law, W B Hobson in the San Jose Securities Co, Inc.
Always a square-dealing foe of civic stagnation, it was significant that he was a member of the city council from 1898 to 1906, at the time when the first charter of the city was adopted.
He was president of the San Jose Realty board, staunch member of the local lodge of Elks, hard worker in the local chamber of commerce and served three years in the California National Guard.
