Elgin was born in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. She immigratged to the Untied States with her parents and siblings through Canada to Chicago, IL in 1865. The came to San Jose, CA a few years later.
After the death of her husband James in 1883, she and her brother-in-law continued to run Hannay Nursery.
She is the mother of four children:
