Donato was born in Carunchio, Chieti, Italy, the son of Michelangelo Farina and Donata Potente. He was married to Palmarosa Caldarone Farina. He emigrated to America in the late 1800's. He was a longtime Newburgh grocer, along with his brother Joseph M. Farina. His children included Mary Farina DelBuono, Victoria Farina Lentini, and Catherine E. Farina Howard, who was a graduate of the nursing school at the Middletown State Hospital, and an army nurse in WWI.
