Army Spc. Hermanson was assigned to the Army National Guard's 164th Engineer Battalion, Minot, North Dakota, as a technical engineer. Hermanson died of injuries sustained when his RG-31 Mine Protected Vehicle came under improvised explosive device, rocket propel grenade and enemy small arms fire while on a route-clearing mission during combat operations south of Balad. Michael attended Horace Mann, Oak Grove, Ben Franklin and graduated from Fargo North in 2002. He joined the Army National Guard as a senior in high school and was attached to the 142nd Headquarters Unit. While attending high school, he was interested in art and never got into any trouble in school. Michael was one of those kids who always had a big smile on his face and would just light up the room when he walked in. He was a very polite, hard working young man who had lots of friends in school – even the teachers loved him. He attended North Dakota State University for two semesters before and after his military training. Michael attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., in 2002, volunteered with the 164th Army Guard in Minot and was deployed to Iraq Nov. 12, 2005.
