Born in New York City, Sylvia earned a degree in Speech and Theater from Brooklyn College, where she met the love of her life, Henry Leff (1918-2007). Her long and varied career included fashion advertising copywriting, radio announcer, and radio engineer during WWII. As "Bobbie Lyons," she was the Emmy-nominated host of the KGO-TV movie program "Star Time Theater" and the host of the interview show "Frankly Feminine" that focused on the status of women abroad. Her other television and film work included commercials, the TV shows "I Spy," "Love on a Rooftop," and KQED's "The Red Myth," and the feature films "Petulia," and "Yours, Mine and Ours." Sylvia obtained a master's degree from SFSU and taught public speaking at CCSF in the 1960s, becoming its first female Dean of Instruction in 1972. After retiring in 1983, she wrote travel pieces for several publications, and hosted, with Henry, a news program on Rossmoor cable TV.
