Mother of 4 - wife of Rex - volunteer of many charitable causes - PEO sister. Ashes scattered in Rose Garden with Rex.
Lorene Nims Land, 92, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2008, after a brief illness following a stroke, at Pacific Coast Care Skilled Nursing Facility in Salinas.

Obituary – Lorene was born in 1916 in Benton, Ark. Along with her two brothers, she was adopted at about age nine by Charles and Georgia Nims of Hot Springs, Ark.

She blossomed in her new home and enjoyed golfing at the neighboring country club by hopping the fence for the back nine, riding horses on the farm, climbing the elm tree to read books in the branches, and taking traveling adventures with her adoptive parents to Mexico and driving across the country to California when the west was wilder and Covina still had orange groves.

Lorene pursued college and attended Hendrix College in Conway, Ark., John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark., where she was voted "Most Beautiful on Campus," and finished her education at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock, Ark.

She met her future husband, Rex, at the University of Arkansas by peeking over his shoulder in history class to read the "funny papers" in the newspaper he brought each day. They married in 1937, the same year they graduated - she with a bachelor's degree in English and a teaching credential.

Lorene settled into being a full time homemaker and moved from Arkansas to Arlington and Alexandria, Va.; Cincinnati, Ohio; Chicago, Ill.; and across country by train to San Carlos/Palo Alto, Calif., area raising a growing family as Rex pursued his management consulting career.

They finally settled in San Marino, Calif., in 1952 and remained for 36 years. Lorene became very active in community and charitable activities in addition to juggling her four children's activities. She was involved with church organizations, serving wherever needed as treasurer, secretary, committee president, or volunteer.

She served in many capacities for the San Marino Women's Club and was past president from 1974 to 1976. Other organizations she served were the Huntington Hospital Auxiliary League, National Charity League, John Tracy Clinic for the Deaf, PEO Sisterhood, and National Republican Committee. She was always the "Southern Lady," firm on teaching her children manners, graciousness, and good grammar.

In 1988, Lorene and Rex decided to return to more rural roots and relocated to Los Osos to enjoy semi-retirement. Lorene found the Trinity United Methodist Church and joined all committees and boards she could serve. She continued her PEO service in Los Osos and made many new dear friends in her new community.

After the death of her life long mate of 59 years, Rex in 1996, she decided to move back to Southern California. A year later, she realized she missed quieter surroundings and decided to move to Monterey to be closer to her daughter and grandsons.

Her health began to fail and in 2003, she moved to Summerville Assisted Living in Salinas. She again made new friends, enjoyed the social activities and her family's visits. Sadly, a stroke struck her down in April and she never fully recovered.

She is survived by her four children June Kirk of Seattle, Wash., Charles Land of Cypress, Calif., Barbara (John) Harper of Monterey, Calif., Lisa Land of Willow Creek, Calif.; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; and sister, Betty (Elmer) Greenlee of Hot Springs, Ark.

Arrangements for cremation are being handled by the Neptune Society of San Jose and a scattering of her remains will take place at the Los Osos Memorial Park rose garden, where she will join Rex among the beautiful blooming roses.
