John Anderson was born on July 18, 1831 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. His parents were Robert Anderson (a master baker from Carrickstone) and Margaret Russell (from Kilsyth). He also had a step-mother named Marion (Miller) Provan. John immigrated to the United States in 1851 and settled in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He was a dry goods salesman. From 1861 to 1866 he had his own business at 13 Milk Street (next to Benjamin Franklin's birthplace). John married Ellen Augusta Pratt(daughter of Daniel Emery Pratt and Charlotte Wilson Nims) on June 16, 1863 at the Mount Vernon Congregational Church in Boston. Reverend Edward Norris Kirk was the officiant. John and Ellen had four children named Charlotte Russell, Robert Emery, Margaret Wilson, and Marion Wharton. The Andersons lived the longest time in Wellesley, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. John died on April 3, 1911 in Watertown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.

Their step-mother, Marion Miller was buried with her daughter's family at the Rosehill Cemetery in Chicago, IL. His maternal grandfather, William Russel, was buried at the Old Kilsyth Cemetery in Stirlingshire, Scotland.
