Word reach Adel last Thursday afternoon that John Barto, Esq., of Van Meter township, had suicided by drowning himself in a watering trough on his farm. The deed was done some time between 10 o'clock and noon of that day. While death at one's own hands comes always as a shock to the friends of the unfortunate one, in this instance it was not entirely unlooked for, as it was well know that he had such designs, owning to the beclouded condition in which his mind had been for some years. The funeral occurred Saturday, and was attended by a large concourse of people. The deceased was a member of the Masonic fraternity and was laid to rest by that order, Rev. Lampman, of Waukee, preaching the sermon. No man in Dallas county lived a more honorable and upright life than John Barto, and during the years of his sad affliction he has had the earnest sympathy of all, and now the same will be extended to the family brough so suddenly to mourn his death.
