A. P. Phares, one of the oldest residence of Appanoose, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. N. P. Benge in this city early this morning after a sudden attack of gall stones. On Saturday Mr. Phares seemed in his usual health and was about town meeting his many friends. However on Saturday evening he became very sick and after a slight rally on Sunday he passed away this morning.

Altho Mr. Phares Mr. Phares has not been actively engaged in business during the past few years, he has kept in touch with progress and was considered a well posted man in city and state affairs. Coming to Centerville during the Civil war he took up his residence in this city and has since that time been actively engaged in the building up of Centerville, he having at one time been a member of city council. At the time of the war Mr. Phares enlisted, but was later given his discharge when his mother made a complaint. Upon his arrival in Centerville he was employed as stage driver and he had the route from this city to Oskaloosa and then to Leon. these were the times when stage driving was one of the most important positions in the community as he was a protector of the U.S. mail. When the time came that the stage was superceded by railroads. Mr. Phares entertained business in Centerville and has since made this his home.

The deceased was born in Keokuk where he lived with his parents until there removal to Madison. He was born in 1842 on July 25th, making him almost 75 years of age at the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his death, his wife, Jennie Brough Phares and six living children. John Wright, Mrs. N. P. Benge, Mrs. B. S. Stitt and Mrs. C. A. Flesher, all of this city, and Adolph of Trenton, Missouri.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from the Believer's church. Mr. Phares during the later part of his life was an active member of this church and was rarely missed, attending Sunday School as well as well as church. Interment will be made in Oakland cemetery.
