He graduated from Windsor High School in 1953. The following fall he enrolled at Warburg College in Waverly, Iowa. While at Wartburg he excelled in athletics, earning first team All-Conference honors in basketball and football. He was also the second baseman on the baseball team. He still holds the school basketball record for most field goals in a single season and is a charter member of the Athletic Hall of Fame, established in 1996. After graduation he was employed as a biology teacher and head basketball coach at Central Community High School in Elkader, Iowa. He got his master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, CO in the summers of 1958-59. In 1964 he accepted a position as Guidance Counselor at Rochelle Township High School. In 1992 he retired after 35 years as a counselor, teacher and coach. In 1996 Art was called to a music ministry singing mostly gospel music at nursing homes and senior centers. He sang in church choirs for over 50 years under the direction of his wife as choir director. For the past 7 years he was the adult Bible class teacher at Calvary Lutheran Church in Lee, Illinois. Over the years Art has volunteered at Meals on Wheels and The Christian Food Pantry and became a member of Compassion International, a Christian-based organization which helps children in underdeveloped countries. Art very much enjoyed playing golf and tennis and fishing in the ponds of Northlake Townhouses and the lakes of Northern Wisconsin. He also spent a lot of time doing crossword puzzles but his most enjoyable activity was spending time with his beloved family.

Art is survived by his dear wife of 58 years, Jean, his sons Matthew (Sue) Margheim and Eric (Shari) Margheim, special grandchildren, Nicole, Joshua, Katie, Erica and Luke, and his brother Roland (Caroline) Margheim.
