Enlisted as a corporal in Company G, the 27th Maine Infantry Volunteers. He was one of the 39 men of Co G that stayed behind in D.C. after their 9-month service was up and was awarded the Medal of Honor (see 'a Shower of Stars' by Pullen and Stone's 'The Twenty-Seventh Maine' for more on this).
