ROBERT W. BAKER

PETERSBURG - Robert Welton Baker, Sr., 81, attorney and former Mayor of Petersburg, died Sunday night, April 9, 1961, in Grant Memorial Hospital, Petersburg, where he had been a patient three weeks.

A son of the late Bernard J. and Mollie (Welton) Baker, he was a lifelong resident of here. He was the last surviving member of the Grant County's oldest families.

Mr. Baker attended Potomac Academy at Romney and was a graduate of Washington and Lee University, where he received his degree in law. During his residence here, Mr. Baker was attorney for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and was a veteran of World War I. He served as stationmaster for the B&O in Cumberland during the war.

He was a lifelong Democrat and was active in organization and affairs of the party. He was a former director of Grant County Bank and a member of Petersburg Presbyterian Church, serving as a member of the board of deacons. He held membership in the West Virginia State Bar Association and Moorefield Lodge AF & AM 29.

Mr. Baker served as the first Mayor of Petersburg following its incorporation in 1910 and held the office until 1922.

Surviving are his widow, Cornelia Stevenson (Taylor) Baker; two daughters, Mrs. Cecil Strickland, South Boston, VA, and Mrs. Robert Hartsell, Jr., Washington; four sons, Colonel John R. Baker, Arlington, VA; Robert Baker, Jr., Edward T. and Donald J. Baker, all of Moorefield, and five grandchildren. One son, Paul Baker, died in 1959.

The body is at the Schaeffer Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 2 until 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

The body will then be taken to the Petersburg Presbyterian Church Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. from where the funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. with Dr. G. O. Yount, officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery
