John was born June 29, 1919, in Bowie, Texas, to Lorenzo Dow and Lula Mae Chambliss.
He graduated from University of Arizona in 1957 with a degree in civil engineering. John was in the Air Force manning radio control towers at bases in the US, Central and South America.
He married Mary Shamis Chambliss, Nov. 11, 1949 in Las Vegas, Nev. He was a Civil engineer for Cal Trans up until his retirement in 1983.
John traveled the US extensively, liked the desert, Lake Meade, square and round dancing. He enjoyed trailer camping at the ocean, liked growing fruits and vegetable at his home in Ojai, Calif. He also enjoyed visiting Bend, Ore. since the late 70's and finally moved to Central Oregon in 1998. He had a deep love for all his extensive family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, and seven brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Chambliss; daughters, Robin Chambliss of Ojai, Calif, Lana Benrath of Bend, Ore., and Donna Nofziger of Christmas Valley, Ore., and Toni Hughes of Las Vegas, Nev.; nine grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of ones choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Niswonger-Reynolds Funeral Home in Bend, Ore.
