Newly freed slaves settled in the Maitland area in 1880’s. Joe Clark, and other residents, acquired 112 acres of land through the good will of Lewis Lawrence and Josiah Eaton. On August 15, 1887, twenty seven residents gathered in the “town Hall” and signed a charter establishing the first all-negro town in the United States. In honor of Josiah Eaton, the town was named Eatonville.
