Georgene Diers, 82, of Scottsbluff, died March 18, 2009 at the Residency Care Center in Scottsbluff. Memorial Services will be held March 26, 2009 at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Scottsbluff. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium. Georgene was born Aug. 1, 1926 in York, Neb. to George I. and Luvah L. (Surface) Myers. She grew up in York and graduated from York High School with the class of 1944.She earned her Bachelors Degree in Music from Baylor University in Waco, Texas in 1948, and that same year moved to Scottsbluff where she began her 43 year tenure as an instrumental music instructor, retiring in 1991.She married Richard M. Diers June 1, 1952 at Holy Trinity Church in York, Neb. Throughout her career at Scottsbluff, Georgene won may awards with her junior high bands, and also served as the assistant director of the senior high bands. She participated in taking the bands to the John F. Kennedy Inaugural parade, the New York World’s Fair, Hemis-Fair in San Antonio, Texas, the Portland Rose Festival, and took the Scottsbluff High School Band on four European Concert tours. Georgene was an active flutist and a private instructor and was the principal flutist in a chamber orchestra touring six European countries. In 1980, she was awarded the “Donald Lentz Outstanding Bandmasters Award.” In 1985, she was inducted into the “Nebraska Music Educators Hall of Fame,” in 1988 was awarded the “Sudler Cup Award” for the outstanding Junior High Concert Band in the U.S. and in 1989 she was awarded the first “Bandworld Legion of Honor Award.”
She was a longtime member of St. Francis Episcopal Church, the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association, the Nebraska Music Educators, had participated in the Music Educators National Conference, and was a member of the Women Band Directors International. Georgene also loved to play golf and was a member of the Scotts Bluff Country Club Women’s Golf Association, volunteered at the Cardiac Rehabilitation Department at Regional West Medical Center and was a member of the St. Francis Altar Guild. Her parents; her husband: Dick; brothers: L. Dale Hanna and Bryce Hanna; and a sister: Jeanne Uren preceded her in death.∼The teacher of all teachers.

If you have ever seen the film "Mr Holland's Opus" you understand the influence Mrs. Diers had on me and thousands upon thousands of others over her 43 years in the Scottsbluff school system.
My father, uncle, sister, and I were all taught by Mrs. Diers. In fact my uncle was in the group that marched in President Kennedy's Inaugural Parade and my sister and I were on two of her European trips.
One of my most vivid memories of Europe was when we went to an American World War II cemetery in France. Most of the soldiers there were casualties of D-Day or of the weeks that followed. Her brother, Bryce, was buried there. I remember two of our trumpeters playing "Taps" in the cemetery, echoing through this beautiful burial ground.
She wasn't the funniest or coolest teacher. In fact she was very strict and quite the task master. This explains the constant success she had with her bands over the years. You might not have liked her, but everyone respected her.
When she did let her guard down she could be very funny. She wasn't one to give out complements easily so when she did, you knew she meant it. We all found ourselves wanting to impress her which in the end took us to our very best.
She is a large part my life and I thank her for teaching me to strive for excellence.
