Edinburgh Evening News - Saturday 11 September 1886, p 3:
THE LATE REV. JAMES JOLLY
We regret to announce the death of the Rev. James Jolly, minister of the Chalmers Territorial Church, West Port, Edinburgh, which occurred last night. Mr Jolly has during the greater part of the year been in bad health through a derangement of the digestive organs. He spent a couple of months in Italy the early spring, but came home little benefitted by the change. Latterly he went to Arran, but his friends seeing his increasing weakness induced him to return home. He left the island about a fortnight ago with this intention, but only got far as Glasgow, and he died last night the residence of his brother-in-law there. Mr Jolly, who was 42 years of age, was married, and leaves widow and eight of a family. He was a native of Dundee, and was educated for the ministry, partly at the University Edinburgh and partly Glasgow. Thirteen years ago he came from the congregation of Hillhead, Glasgow, where he had been minister for few years, to successor to the late Mr Tasker at the church in West Port. His ministerial labours have been very successful, the congregation having increased from a membership 900 to one of about 1300. Though not what is known as popular preacher, Mr Jolly was an earnest and laborious worker, not sparing himself in his endeavours to successfully discharge the pastoral duties a large congregation iv densely populated mission district.
