Leila Colston was the daughter of Raleigh Edward Colston and Louisa Meriwether Bowyer.

Six years before Leila was born, her family was on the 1850 Lexington, Virginia census, I found VMI Professor Edward R. Colston, 27, born in France; the rest born in Virginia: Louisa M. Colston, 35; Mary F. Colson, 1; Peter (Ancestry indexes Petra) L. Brown, 11 and Louisa L. Colston, 3, Virginia born.

On the 1860 Lexington, Virginia census, I found VMI Prof., R. E. Colston, 34, born in France; other Colstons, all born in Virginia: Louisa M., 45; Louisa E., 13; Mary F., 11 and LELA B., 5. Ancestry indexes Lela as SELA.

Lela Colston died 2 Jan 1862 in Lexington, Virginia of croupe, aged 7 years, daughter of R. E. and Lou/Louisa Colston. She was born in Lexington and her mother was the informant. Per the 1862 Rockbridge Co., Virginia Register of Deaths, line 48, Film # 107848144 on Familysearch, 608/620.

The day after his daughter dies, on the 3rd, "It is announced by the Day Book of this morning that Col. R. E. Colston, of the 16th Regiment Virginia Volunteers, has been promoted to be a Brigadier General. We mention with pleasure the promotion of that popular and skillful officer." Published in the Daily Dispatch (Richmond), Vol 21, #3, dated 3 Jan 1862.

Leila is buried next to sister Jane Fauntleroy Colston, died "1852" per W&L survey here. Jane was not listed in the death register, as it began in 1853.

Parts of marker are hard to read. Leila's middle name looks like Collfield or Bellfield, investigating.
12 Oct 2023: "Sadly, the marker is now broken, lying face down on the ground."
