Olga was born in the little fishing hamlet called Sjøbovik at the very southern tip of Norway and was christened 27 Mar 1910 in the Halse Parish. In earlier days, she would probably have used the surname Govertsdatter but by this time many families were choosing a permanent surname and her family chose to use the surname Olsen. Her father Govert (Berntsen) Olsen was a widower with two small children when he married her mother, Amalia Stallesdatter Opsal in 1907. Olga was the first of the three children that the couple had in Norway. The family arrived in America 27 Oct 1915, traveling from Kristiansand to England to New York, and settled first in Milan, Minnesota. Govert's brother Ole (Dr. Olav Behrents) had also immigrated to Minnesota and adopted the name of Behrents - an adaptation of Berntsen. Govert's family immediately began to use this name as well. Two more children were born in Minnesota before the family relocated permanently to Menomonie, Wisconsin where their final child was born. Olga grew up there, probably marrying Odin Thorud there as well. She and Odin had two boys, both born in Menomonie.
