Born in Milwaukee, WI; his first business venture was with T. H. Judd. In 1872 he joined John Rugee and they formed the Durr and Rugee Lumber Company. Their products included both hard and soft lumber, flooring, sashes, foors and moldings. Durr was active outside of his lumber concerns and was the organizer and first president of the German-American Bank; he also srved on the commission that inaugurated the city's water system. His home which was designed by the architect John Rugee, and built in 1875 is still standing on South Third Street in Milwaukee.
