Katherine was raised on a farm in Huxley, Alberta and boarded at St. Mary's Convent in Trochu, Alberta for her schooling. She then trained as a teacher at the University of Alberta, subsequently teaching in Faith, Alberta as well as in several Catholic schools in Vancouver, British Columbia. She was the mother of four and had nine grandchildren.
