Aubrey was born in Penryn, Cornwall, England where his family owned a shop that sold shoes. He was working as a travelling salesman in Birmingham, selling fabric to tailors, when a man he chanced to meet in a public house convinced him to emigrate to Canada.

Aubrey set sail from Liverpool aboard the 'Tunisian', arriving in Montreal on July 24th, 1903. He stayed a few months in Montreal before eventually making his way to Alberta, where he worked for a while as a surveyor for the Canadian Pacific Railway before becoming an importer & breeder of English Shire horses in Trochu, and later a farmer in Huxley.

He met his wife, Agnes, when she arrived in Canada from the United Kingdom in 1908. They were married in 1910 and went on to have four children together. Their descendants are in Canada today.

Aubrey was raised a Methodist and was educated at the Truro Wesleyan College in Cornwall, England but converted to Roman Catholicism in his sixties after a bout of pneumonia, because he wanted to be buried beside his Catholic wife.
