Anna Serha passed away peacefully at Cooney Home in Helena at age 95 surrounded by her family on Saturday, June 10, 2006.

Anna Weizer Serha was born on Sept. 11, 1910, in Daikalivka, Ukraine to Phillipe and Maria (Trotsky) Weizer. She was the eighth daughter of 10 children.

Anna did not have an opportunity to go to school in the Ukraine because of the continuous wars from the time she was a child. After her arrival in the U.S. on Dec. 7, 1951, she had a strong desire to learn English and pursue a formal education. Unfortunately, she had to delay her dreams until the children were raised due to her husband's early death. Anna was an avid learner until illness prevented her from furthering her education.

Anna was a homemaker, a loving mother and grandmother, and friend to all she knew as no one was a stranger to her. She loved to sing, read poems and tell stories. She had a remarkable oral history of her life, poetry and culture growing up in the Ukraine. Anna had a beautiful voice. She was also an accomplished embroiderer, quilter, seamstress, cook and baker, and a passionate gardener.

Anna had an inner sparkle that was expressed through the brilliant twinkle in her eyes and the smile she had for all - especially the children. Anna was a charismatic person - she would light up a room when she walked in. She was an amazing, remarkable, resilient, hardworking, determined woman that had an incredible zest for life.

She was preceded in death by her parents and family in the Ukraine; her husband, Fedir Serha, on Oct. 1, 1970; five of her children, Warka, Yulana, Nastushka, Vasilkov and Marissa Serha; and a grandson, James Barton.

Surviving Anna are her beloved family members: daughter and son-in-law, Natalie and Doug Smith of Helena; son and daughter-in-law, John and Sheila Serha of East Helena; son, Mike Serha of Helena; daughter and son-in-law, Vera Serha and Mike Burrows of Gig Harbor, Wash.; daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth (Leeza) Serha and Ken Visconti of Issaquah, Wash.; daughter, Mary Barton of Tacoma, Wash.; and daughter, Nadie Serha of Denver, Colo.

Grandchildren, Nikhal Smith of Helena; Karri Ryan of Billings; Shelley Ryan and Michelle Barton of Tacoma; Mark Barton of Hood River, Ore.; Deborah Bennett of Perry, Ga.; and Melanie (Mike) Hoch of Fruita, Colo.

Great-grandchild, Tyler Barton of Tacoma, Wash.

Anna was a spiritual person who was raised in the Ukrainian Orthodox faith and for the last 30 years enjoyed attending the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Helena with her family.

Anna is deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all whose lives that she has touched. Her spirit will live on through her family and friends forever.

The family wishes to thank all their friends for the support they have given over the past few years. They would also like to thank the staff of Cooney Home, SPCH Home Link Hospice for their support and help with Mom.

A time to remember her will be held at Retz Funeral Home, 315 E. 6th Ave. - services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 14. Visitation will be from 11 a.m until funeral time. Minister John O'Leary will officiate. Reception to immediately follow at Cooney Home, 2555 E. Broadway, Helena.
