Opera Singer. A soprano, she is remembered as one of her country's leading stars over a long career. Born Clarice Katz, she was raised and trained in Montreal, made her 1956 professional debut at a Sarah Fischer Concert, joined the Opera Guild of Montreal in 1959, her roles there including the Lady-in-Waiting of Verdi's "Macbeth" and Micaela from Bizet's "Carmen", and in 1965 bowed at the New York City Opera as La Contessa in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro". Clarice gave the first of her 63 Metropolitan Opera performances on September 28, 1967 as the First Lady in Mozart's "The Magic Flute", then over the next seasons was Helmwige from Wagner's "Die Walkure" and a Priestess in Verdi's "Aida" before assuming the major roles of Musetta in Puccini's "La Boheme", the title heroine of the same composer's "Tosca", and the doomed Violetta from Verdi's "La Traviata". Over the coming seasons, Clarice toured throughout Canada and the United States, was heard in such European cities as Milan, Barcelona, Amsterdam, and Glasgow, and even returned to The Met in the mid-1970s, her repertoire including Desdemona in Verdi's "Otello", Fiordigili of Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte", Maddalena from Umberto Giordano's "Andrea Chenier", Alice Ford of Verdi's "Falstaff", Donna Anna in Mozart's "Don Giovanni", and the title leads of Verdi's "Aida", Richard Strauss' "Salome", and Puccini's "Suor Angelica", "Madame Butterfly", and "Turandot". Following her 1986 retirement from the stage, she relocated to Toronto where she remained active in the arts community as long as she was able. In 1998 Clarice was inducted into the Canadian Opera Hall-of-Fame, then in 2013 she was honored with a plaque at the National Opera America Center in New York. At her demise, she could be heard on a number of archived live performances.
