Arlene C. Klabunde, age 84, of 1422 Marshall Street, Manitowoc, died Sunday morning, February 5, 2012 at Aurora Medical Center, Manitowoc County.

She was born on June 28, 1927 in Two Rivers, daughter of the late William and Clara (Nitzke) Mertens.

Arlene attended St. John's Lutheran Church Grade School and was very proud of her Christian heritage. She also attended Washington High School, Two Rivers. On August 20, 1949 she married Edward Klabunde at St. John Lutheran Church, Two Rivers.

After high school, Arlene's wish was to go to Chicago and work with the infants in orphanages. Even though she was unable to do this, she was blessed with wonderful grandchildren that she loved and cherished. She loved children and also achieved her certificate to be a licensed foster parent. Arlene was a woman with wonderful morals and values. A hard worker who while working raising her children also took care of her mother and mother-in-law. Arlene was employed with various companies in Manitowoc and retired from Shady Lane Nursing Care Center after 19 years, which was a job she truly enjoyed and where she made many friends. After retirement, she was also employed part-time at the Herald Times Reporter.

Survivors include her husband: Edward Klabunde, Manitowoc; two sons: Tom Klabunde and special friend: Carrie, Kevin Klabunde; five daughters and a son-in-law: Cynthia Sprang, Debra Kreie, Lori Klabunde and special friend: Mike, Leisa and James Zich, Tina Klabunde; all of Manitowoc; twelve grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; a sister: Carol Gauthier, Manitowoc; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Donald & Carol Klabunde, Hancock, WI and Ruthie and Bob Dehling, Coloma, WI., her special companion: Maggie (her mag pie and yanna). Nieces, nephews, other relatives and many special friends also survive.

She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter: Rebecca Alvarez (her boo berry); a son-in-law: Gary Kreie; one brother and sister-in-law: Albert and Ivy Mertens; three sisters and brothers-in-law: Esther Barr, Edna and Willfred Brocher, Evelyn and William Kaiser, Allen Gauthier; and one brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Ervin Klabunde and his wife Constance and Elsie Clark and her husband, Rollin.

Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Service will be the Rev. Dr. James Klein. Cremation will occur after the service at All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc, and Arlene will be laid to rest at Knollwood Mausoleum, Manitowoc, at a later date.

The family will greet relatives and friends at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, from 11:30 a.m. Thursday, February 9, 2012 until 12:45 p.m.In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in Arlene's name.

The family would like to thank Dr. Rohde, Dr. Barylak and the staff at Radiation & Oncology at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Center. Though mom was ill, she always looked forward to going and "seeing the girls". A big thank you to Arlene's granddaughter, Gwen Taylor, for helping Tina with mom and dads care. Mother was very grateful. The family would also like to thank Cathy and Joe from Aging Resources in Manitowoc, along with everyone else who offered and assisted with Arlene's care. We love you mom and we will miss you, but we know you are at peace with the Lord.
