George Washington Conrad was the fifth of six known children of John Henderson Conrad (1815-1898) and his first known wife, Mary Ann Darr (1822-1855), who married 04 Dec 1839 at Davidson County, North Carolina. After Mary died, John remarried to Sarah "went by Sally" Bowers (1814-p1870) on 02 Jun 1857 at Davidson County, North Carolina and had one known additional child. After Sally died, John remarried to Animaria Rebekah Barbara (went by Barbara) Conrad (1835-1926) on 08 Aug 1876 at Davidson County, North Carolina, but had no known additional children.

George married his second cousin, Mary Ann Elizabeth Leonard (1853-1930) on 11 Jul 1875 at Davidson County, North Carolina. George and Mary were the parents of ten known children, namely:

1. LuElla Conrad Conrad (1872-1953)
2. Cora Belle Conrad Yokley (1875-1965)
3. Edward Parker Conrad (1878-1956)
4. Addie May Conrad Grimes (1880-1954)
5. Sudie Lee Conrad Everhart (1882-1973)
6. Grover Cleveland Conrad (1885-1950)
7. Artie Elnora Conrad Anthony Irby (1887-1961)
8. Sadie Anna Conrad Sink (1889-1973)
9. George Franklin Conrad (1891-1971)
10. Hazel Naomi Conrad (1896-1896)

George was a building contractor and a cabinet maker. He built many of the homes and barns in the community. He and his family were farmers. They had a couple hundred acres of land and tended a big part of this where they grew corn, wheat and vegetables for their own living.

When George & Mary were first married, he built a small house on what is now Ridge Road, later moved it to the barnyard and used it for a wheat house. Then he built a large building for a kitchen and lived in this while he was building the big two story house that is still there. The first barn was a log barn, which burned in 1903.

George and Mary were members of the Old Pilgrim Church until the Lutherans split and divided. When the church and land were put up for sale, George bid for the Lutherans. Mr. Andrew Long bid for the Reformeds, so the Lutherans came up on Ridge Road and built. Mary Ann was a charter member of Bethesda Methodist Church. Later she moved her membership back to New Pilgrim where she was a member the rest of her life.
