Katherine (Gerads) Schoenberg
1858 - 1935

Katherine (Gerads) Schoenberg was born 21 May 1858, Stotternich, Rheinland, Prussia (Germany) - approximately 30 miles west of Cologne, Germany. In 1863, shortly after the birth of her younger brother Carl, 5 year old Katherine "Katie" Gerads, her 7 year old brother William travelled to America with their parents, (Charles) Carl Gerads and Katherine (Klinkenberg) Gerads.

The five members of the Gerads family did not settle in Wisconsin, as many German families had done, but went directly to Minnesota. The first 3 years in America the Gerads family lived in Shakopee, Scott County, Minnesota.

In 1866, after the birth of their forth child – Heinrich "Henry" Gerads on July 30, 1865, Carl & Catherine packed up & moved the family to the central part of the State of Minnesota. They moved to the County of Stearns, specifically to Krain Township located approximately 35 miles northwest of the County Seat in St. Cloud. Years later the name of the village was changed from "Gates" to the current name of St. Anthony, Stearns County, Minn. (not to be confused with St. Anthony across the river from Minneapolis in Hennenpin County, Minn.)

In 1876, when she was 18 years old, Katie Gerads left her parent's home in St. Anthony, Krain Township, to experience new adventures in the next stage of her life. Katie moved about 15 miles southwest, to the village of Melrose, where she would work as a seamstress and a domestic for the Bela Burrill family.

The 1880 US Census for Melrose, Minnesota shows a Katie Gerhards, age 22, living in the home of Bela & Mary Burrill, and their 3 children. It was in Melrose that Katie Gerads met her future husband, Martin J Schoenberg.

Marriage and Family
On November 21, 1882, when both Martin and Katherine were 24 years old, were married at St. John's Catholic Church in Meire Grove, Minn. The young couple made their home on a 160+ acre farm approx 2 miles north of the village of Spring Hill, Minn.

Note: the Schoenberg farm is located in parts of Sections 8, 9 and 16 of Spring Hill township. Today, 130+ years later, the farm still remains in the Schoenberg family.

The 9 children of Katie & Martin Schoenberg are:

-Charles "Carl" (1883-1971)
-Anna Welle(1885-1944)
-Apollonia K. Welle (1887-1976)
-Joseph (1888-1969)
-Wilhelm "Willie"(1890-1937)
-Mary Braun (1893-1965)
-Wilhelmina "Minnie"Ellering (1895-1984)
-Heinrich "Henry" (1898-1917)
-Katherine "Katie" Athmann Caspers(1900-1985)

After they sold the homestead to their son, Wilhelm "Willie" Schoenberg and his wife Ellie, in 1915, Martin & Katie Schoenberg moved into the village of Spring Hill. A few years earlier, Martin & Katie had helped their two older sons, Carl & Joe, purchased and settle on farms adjacent to the homeplace.

Death and Burial
Katie's husband, Martin, died 12 Oct 1923 in Spring Hill of kidney disorder. Some years after Martin's death, Katie moved to the farm owned by her son & daughter-in-law, Joe and Mary (Ellering) Schoenberg, north of Spring Hill.

Katherine (Gerads) Schoenberg died on her son's farm on Wednesday, October 30, 1935, 12 years after her husband. The funeral mass was held on Saturday, November 2, 1935 at St. Michael's Church in Spring Hill, Minn. Burial followed in the parish cemetery.

At the time of her death (1935), she was survived by eight of her 9 children (see children listed above), two sisters; Mrs. Mary (Thomas) Cremers and Mrs. Caroline (Frank) Rakotz and two brothers; Carl Gerads & John Gerads. All 4 surviving siblings lived in the area around St. Anthony, Minn, near the area where their parents originally settled in Krain Township, Stearns, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Katherine Gerads, son Henry Schoenberg in 1917 and four brothers: William, Henry, Martin and Joseph Gerads.

Katie & Martin are buried next to each other in Row 3 of St. Michaels Cemetery in Spring Hill, MN. Their son, Heinrich "Henry" Schoenberg, is buried next to them.

Longlasting & Loving Tribute to
Katherine (Gerads) Schoenberg

The statue at the top of the left side alter in St. Michael's Church is that of St. Catherine. Purchased and donated in 1918, this statue is the patron saint of his wife, Katherine Schoenberg.

Katie and Martin's son, Heinrich "Henry" Schoenberg, died in February 1917, at the age of 18 years. To honor his memory for years to come, Martin & Katie Schoenberg purchased a statue of St. Henry to stand atop of the right side alter.

The statues of St. Catherine and St. Henry were donated around 1918 and still stands in the same location, nearly a century after they were donated by the Schoenberg family.
