Rachel Jenning Stiff was born to William Jennings and Hannah Moss in Sherborne St John, Hampshire, England on 7 Jun 1809. Rachel married William Neville Stiff on 27 sep 1826 at Hartley, Wespall, Hampshire, England.

The Stiffs joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and left England in 1867 on the ship Hudson arriving in New York on July 19th. They worked in New York until the spring of 1868 when they purchased train tickets to follow the railroad as far as the tracks had been completed. Their train ride ended 50 miles west of Laramie, Wyoming with 500 miles of the Mormon Trail still ahead.

Rachel was 59 and William was 63 at the time, and with little money or posessions they traveled using a handcart to reach their destination. They arrived in the Great Salt Lake Valley on August 29, 1868 and traveled on to Centerville where their daughter Annie lived.

Later they used this same handcart to move to Woodruff, Utah were they lived their remaining years.

Their handcart was on display in the Smithsonian Institute for a time and later donated to the LDS Church. The Stiff handcart is currently on display in the LDS Museum of Church History in Salt Lake City, Utah.
