Johan was born in Drahotešice, Bohemia. He was the son of Frank Kubat and Elizabeth Blaha. He came to the United States around 1882. He married Elizabeth Hrach on June 14, 1885 in St Johns Church in Chicago. They raised at least 9 children - six of whom survived their parents. Johan worked as a teamster for Edward Hines Lumber Company. He lived with his famly for many years at 5021 S. Robey (now 5021 S. Damen).
