Major League Baseball Player. For six seasons (1963 to 1967 and 1969), he played at the first base and outfielder positions with the Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators and California Angels. Born Robert Chance, he attended William James High School in Georgia and was signed as an amateur free agent by the San Francisco Giants in 1961. He ended up with Cleveland and marked his Major League debut on September 4, 1963. Chance produced a career-high 109 hits, which included 14 home runs and 75 runs-batted-in, as he split first base duties with Fred Whitfield. He was named to the Topps All-Star Rookie Team that year. In 277 career regular season games, he compiled 195 hits with a .261 career batting average. After retiring from baseball, he worked for the City of Charleston, West Virginia Department of Recreation. He died of complications from prostate cancer.
