Childhood:
Elsie was born in a one-room log cabin in the Arkansas Ozarks.
Her sister, Delsie, tells that Elsie Clifton was always a "mother hen" over the younger children in her family because their mother had died when Elsie was 8 years old, Delsie was 7 years old, Hugh was 5 years old, Fred was 3 years old, and Oscar was 1 year old. Elsie and Delsie were very close growing up. Older sister Alice, age 12, & brother John, age 11, worked hard while Elsie did the "mothering."
Marriage:
At age 16, Elsie married Calvin Hansberry Greathouse on 28 May 1927 at McAlester, Pittsburg, Oklahoma. They raised five children in Oklahoma and Texas. Calvin was a farmer and then section foreman for the railroad.
Death:
At age 60 Elsie suffered a fatal heart attack.
