She moved to Hamlet with her husband J.W. in October 1954. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hamlet and served as interpreter for the deaf. Her first love was teaching of children in the 1st and 2nd grades. She worked for 30 years at Hamlet Library and worked hard to see the library wing being built. She served on Hamlet’s All American City Committee and was present in Phoenix, Arizona when the City was named All-America City. Mrs. Jernigan was a charter member of the Daughters of the American Revolution-General Henry Williams Chapter served as Regent and other offices, a member of the Seaboard Festival Day Inc. Board of Directors serving as chairman for several years. She served on Save our Station Committee and was chairman of Hamlet’s Centennial Committee collecting early pictures and memories of Hamlet and successful in getting the book More Than A Memory in Hamlet, NC published of which she was the author. Norva also published a book on The Hawley Family of North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her husband J.W. Jernigan.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, May 27, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church in Hamlet with Rev. Randy Bishop officiating. Burial will follow at Mary Love Cemetery.
Surviving, A daughter, Diane Sudderth and husband Tom of Chapel Hill; A son, Joey Jernigan and wife Judy of Hamlet; Grandchildren, Sarah Greene and husband Ian, Rachel Holoman and husband Carter, Jordan Russell and husband Nick and Josh Jernigan. Great grandchildren, Cordelia and Monroe Greene and Elliot Holoman; Several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 P.M. prior to the service at the church.
