Gilbert was the son of James McCulley and Elizabeth (UNK). He was born in Pennsylvania, Delaware or Virginia (according to various census records). He was the first generation born in the USA. His parents were from Ireland. He married Elizabeth Beggs on 18 Aug 1831 in Guernsey County, Ohio. They had nine children.

Gilbert had a cousin named Gilbert and people doing their trees often mistake them. The other Gilbert was born in 1805/6. (his FAG #67300171) They are both in census records living near each other in Guernsey, Ohio. When researching be careful you don't mix them up!
