Robert E Patterson's regiment, the 115th Infantry, was doing provost duty in Taneytown, Maryland on the 29th of June, and was moved to Emmittsburg the following day. The unit joined up with its brigade and Major John P Dunne in front of Round Top, in a very vulnerable position. After receiving shell fire, the unit moved to a wooded area to the southeast of the Wheatfield under the cover of a stone wall, and next to the 8th New Jersey Infantry, where it held its position until they were completely flanked, retiring to the Union battery's position. Even then, the men knelt in the tall grass and drove back the swarming Confederates. Again delivered to the front lines on the third day, then double quick to support the Irish Brigade (New York's 63rd, 69th and 88th ) at left center, but did not reach them in time to truly assist.

The 115th had lost so many of their officers and men by this time, it was consolidated into the 110th Pennsylvania Infantry until the end of the war.
